Priorities Out of Whack? It Shows on the Scoreboard

Just like in football, when priorities are off, the team suffers. In chapter 2 of *Are You Coachable?*, Stirlen draws on his experiences and the wisdom of Jud Boies to show how many churches and Christians spend energy on the wrong things. Boies says that many team members believe they’re doing great, but they’re failing in their manager’s eyes because they’ve ignored the most important goals. Stirlen compares this to believers ignoring the clear priorities of Christ—evangelism and discipleship—because they feel unqualified, too busy, or uninterested. The real issue, he says, is disobedience. The pastor might be calling the play, but the players won’t run it. As a result, churches stagnate. Stirlen challenges readers to audit their calendars: does your weekly schedule reflect Christ’s priorities? If not, change it. The call is to align your personal life and your church’s mission with the biblical priorities of Christ. Don’t confuse being busy with being obedient. Focus on what matters to the Coach.
