This Is a Bible: Get Back to the Basics

If Jesus were our Head Coach today, how would He evaluate our team? Too many churches are shrinking, discipleship is minimal, evangelism is an afterthought, and believers are uninspired. In the introduction to *Are You Coachable?*, Larry Stirlen issues a spiritual wake-up call: ‘Are you coachable? Are you willing to follow My commands for the good of the Kingdom and My glory?’ He parallels Vince Lombardi’s famous line, ‘Gentlemen, this is a football,’ with what Jesus might say today: ‘This is a Bible. We have to get back to the basics.’ The core issue isn’t lack of resources or talent. It’s a lack of obedience to the basics: evangelism and discipleship. Church leaders and believers alike are discouraged, worn down, and wondering where the power went. Stirlen emphasizes that we’ve been given all the resources we need—what’s missing is buy-in. We must recommit to the fundamentals laid out in Matthew 28:18–20 and 2 Timothy 2:2. Stirlen also highlights Barna research showing pastors are burned out and believers disengaged. Yet, when the church obeys Christ’s commands, it thrives. The call is simple: get back to the basics. Read your Bible, pray, share your faith, make disciples. Are you coachable?
