When the Team Falls Apart: Why Unity Matters

A team without unity is a team destined to lose. In chapter 1 of *Are You Coachable?*, Stirlen explains that unity in the Church mirrors unity in a championship team. Every player has a role, and when each role is respected and fulfilled, the team wins. But disunity—rooted in pride, offense, or doctrinal divides—tears teams apart. Stirlen writes, ‘Unity doesn’t come easy to churches today. They are fraught with divisions and splits.’ Using Ephesians 4:1–16, he outlines a formula for unity: humility, peace, and shared purpose. When each believer uses their gifts to build up the Church rather than compete for attention, the result is maturity and strength. Pastors, teachers, and leaders are to equip others—not do all the work themselves. Unity is not a suggestion; it’s a strategy for victory. Ask yourself: Am I building unity or causing division? Do I use my gifts to strengthen the Church? Stirlen urges readers to reflect on Ephesians 4 and recommit to the mission together. When the Church works as one, it wins as one.
